This is the Freddy Mercury Montreux Swiss 0 Souvenir Banknote which shows the Freddie Mercury statue in Montreux. Montreux is a Swiss municipality and town on the shoreline of Lake Geneva at the foot of the Alps. It belongs to the district of Riviera-Pays-d'Enhaut in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland, and has a population of approximately 26,433, with about 85,000 in the agglomeration Vevey-Montreux as 2019.
The bronze Freddie Mercury statue perched on Montreux’s lakeside promenade is a striking tribute to the iconic lead singer of Queen. Towering at around three meters tall, the sculpture captures Freddie in his electrifying 1986 Wembley pose — clad in a military-style jacket, leaning into his microphone stand, and thrusting his fist skyward in pure rock‑star charisma.
Created by Czech sculptor Irena Sedlecká, the statue was unveiled on 25 November 1996, the fifth anniversary of Freddie’s passing, in a ceremony attended by his family, Queen band members, and the founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival. From his inspiring final years spent recording at Mountain Studios in the Montreux Casino, Freddie famously described the town as a haven for peace and creativity — “If you want peace of mind, come to Montreux.” His affection for the city made the statue deeply personal and meaningful.
Today, the statue draws fans from around the world who leave flowers, letters, candles, and handwritten messages at its base. It also serves as the focal point for annual commemorative gatherings like Freddie Mercury Montreux Memorial Day each September. Against the backdrop of Lake Geneva and the Alps, the monument embodies Freddie’s spirit of freedom and creativity, standing as a timeless symbol of his enduring bond with Montreux.
